Clancy Brown’s Favorite Mr. Krabs Episodes

BuzzFeed: Let’s begin on the very starting! What was the audition for Mr. Krabs like, and do you know what his voice would sound like going into it?

Clancy Brown: I used to be very new to voice appearing at that time. The casting director was so nice and acquired in contact with my agent. I used to be simply form of auditioning for every thing, they usually stated, “This is a present. He is the crab. He runs the diner. He is form of a skinflint.” I am listening to this, not getting it in any respect. I requested, “Nicely, what is the voice? What are the voice references?” There is not any voice reference—simply go in and form of make it up as you go alongside.

So I learn the edges [script excerpts], and the edges sounded to me somewhat bit like, you recognize, the Treasure Island pirate. So I simply form of did that voice, and it was with Steve [Stephen Hillenburg, the show’s creator], and it was in a convention room. He had his little tape recorder, and that was the primary time I would been in there. I often go right into a studio and get directed, and that is the primary time I am sitting throughout from anyone at a convention desk, and he is recording me. I simply form of did it, and he favored it, after which he stated to me, “Okay, simply go forward and riff off of the script.” I form of threw my palms up within the air. I stated, “You already know, I do not actually understand how to do this. You are the director.”
