In an interview with Refinery29, the Emmy-winning star spoke candidly about recurrently having Black ladies play his love pursuits — a call he says may be very intentional.
Sterling has appeared in over 70 TV and film tasks — and sometimes with a Black love curiosity by his facet — whether or not that is Susan Kelechi Watson in This Is Us or Teri Rogers-Collins in Paradise. When requested whether or not he makes these casting selections “consciously,” Sterling confirmed he does.
“I am conscious of the kind of Eurocentric requirements of magnificence that are likely to predominate media,” he defined. “Mild-skin oftentimes is seen as extra stunning than dark-skin, and so forth. and Brown desires to be somebody that kind of exhibits all the magnificence that’s Blackness, proper?”
He continued, “Brown do not discriminate, to be completely sincere with you. I perceive the facility of illustration and the way usually Black ladies appear to really feel unseen by Black males, specifically. And there is so many sisters which are ready for brothers to be like, ‘Hey, man, I’m right here for you and whatnot.’ And brothers generally don’t are likely to see them.”
Sterling, who’s married IRL to fellow actor Ryan Michelle Bathe, mentioned he is hoping to vary that narrative by his casting decisions. “I need them to know that SKB sees them,” he defined, “and hopefully within the people who he chooses to be paired with onscreen or whatnot, there’s an appreciation for them and that they know that they’re as stunning as I do know they’re.”
